I really slept badly tonight (dreamt about a Doberman attacking me, yay) and hence fell asleep on the couch in the afternoon. Feeling out of sorts now. And I need to wake up properly because I'm going to a birthday party where you have to stay at least until midnight. It's Jessi's 30th birthday...I'm starting to be the youngest person I know :)) I'll tell you all about it when I get home.

On a sidenote: Turns out today that our snowboarding trip is indeed off. I don't know whether to be happy or sad about it. On one hand I would have really liked to go, on the other hand I was getting all worked up about the money issue...So now I have an unplanned week ahead of me. Well, at least some extra time to work on my final paper (sigh, that'll be fun)

OK. I am a little bit drunk at the moment but I'll try to give you an update of my Berlin trip...

Let me tell you about the Zwan concert first and how good it was!!! There actually weren't too many people there so we still got tickets at the location. Opening act Mia performed to an audience that was completely immobile. I've never seen anything like it. They were carved out of stone. They did not move an eyebrow. They did not clap. Nothing. I somehow felt sorry for Mia, they actually were not that bad...I've seen much worse (Mr. Big comes to mind - don't ask). Sort of a mixture of punk/Bjork/Velvet Underground. In German, too, but you couldn't understand much, the sound was sort of bad. But hey, I still think one should at least acknowledge the effort of an opening act. Nobody did, though.

When Billy Corgan walked out onto the stage, they started thawing, though. He was looking really good, too. I mean, he is always good-looking, but he looked really well...I can only compare it to the last Smashing Pumpkins concert I saw when he was dressed in that long leather coat standing at the microphone, not moving an inch, looking miserable (Weltschmerz!). Here it just seemed like he was having fun...energy was coming off him in waves, I can't really describe it, but it just sucked you in and pulled you along. He even played the guitar with his teeth at one point. So at the end you would not have recognized the crowd. Everybody was in a frenzy jumping and dancing. It just made me feel really good which I haven't in a long time and that was so fucking relieving I can't even begin to tell you. I bought the CD the next day, too, and am listening to it right now. Sort of sounds like the Smashing Pumpkins, but I guess you can't avoid that what with his distinctive voice and everything. I just love the second song, but it was just so much better live...that concert alone was worth going to Berlin for, really.
Note: Sorry, Paul, it was that good...too bad you couldn't come, but I bought you a present, it being your birthday and all. Though I have to admit it's not really the best present ever but hopefully it's the thought that counts... :)

Then on to the reason why we had gone there. Starring on TV. I've done this before, because I'm really good at waving to the general public out of an audience while other people make loads of money :) This time it was my roommate who won about a gazillion Euros while I grinned and waved like an idiot. Well, somebody has to do it. But I'm telling you, if they ever accept my application at "Who wants to be a millionaire" there will be no stopping me...

At least we had a reason to party afterwards :) Had lots of drinks (which doesn't really signify anything in Berlin, because drinks there are just so small...here people would riot if you'd try to sell them beers that small). And today we went back. Another 7 hours on the ICE (you know how much I love travelling by train, yechhh). Ah well, it was really really worth it...I had a good time.

Things are not looking so rosy for my snowboarding trip, though...I don't know if we'll be able to go after all...we'll see.

That's it for today. I am going to bed, still listening to my CD. Thank you for your attention.

Another serious drawback to my final thesis paper plans...Thomas found Online-Bloodbowl and I've assembled a little team of my own. Trounced him 2:1 and 2:0, too :)) Go Skavens!

Actually, I've made some progress with my paper today - a first experiment is ready to be inflicted on unsuspecting people, i.e. you if I can get a hold of you anytime...it's just a short test..it will not harm you...come and get it while it's still hot.

Going to Berlin with Diana tomorrow morning. Haven't packed yet - what else is new? We should be back on Thursday, so you'll have to wait for further updates until then.

I thought maybe today I should lighten up the mood by posting only good things. Since I posted really bad movies somewhere down the page, here's a list of movies I like. It's not in any particular order. Don't bother to complain that some of these movies are not "good" movies. These are just movies I like to watch depending on moods and circumstances.

Disclaimer: I most likely WILL forget some movies that ought to have been included and WILL include some that really should have been. It's only a list. You can add to it anything you'd like.

  • The Great Escape
If I had to name three reasons why they'd all start with Steve McQueen. But secretly, I'd take James Garner anytime. Hey, he can get you anything you like. Honorary Movie Mention Here: Chicken Run

  • Little Shop of Horrors
Wins my MonAward for best Musical. Don't feed the plants!

  • Léon
And no, it does not star Jean Claude van Damme, the muscles from Brussels. Don't ask me again. Go educate yourself.

  • Stupid Dumbass Comedy Prize: Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure
Stupid dumbass comedies don't get any better. And I get to say that I liked Keanu way before anybody else knew he existed.

  • The Court Jester
Say it with me: The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle. The chalice from the palace has the brew that is true!

  • Star Wars IV, V and VI
Or I, II and III as I like to call them, because those others just did not exist as far as I am concerned. Nor do the "enhanced" digital versions, thank you very much.

  • Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Ah, those days where Indy was still around... Honorary Movie Mention: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

  • E.T.
What can I say, I am a sucker for 80s movies. And to prove it, I'll include the
  • Early Matthew Broderick Oeuvre aka Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Wargames. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Go to Defcon 1.

  • Lawrence of Arabia
    It's so...monumental....and Peter O'Toole's eyes are so...blue...

  • T2
A given for best ac-shun movie. Honorary Movie Mention: Mission Impossible

  • And the award for Most Disturbing Vietnam Movie goes to: Full Metal Jacket. Honorary Movie Mention: Good Morning Vietnam

  • Best Movie With Scary Villain in a Cage: Silence of the Lambs

  • The best two movies that people take serious but are parodies really and as such are always a pleasure to watch: Starship Troopers and ConAir

  • Lilo and Stitch shares the glory of Best Disney Movie with Aladdin
Even if you don't like Disney movies, you might give those a try. As far as animation in general, I have a soft spot in my heart for

  • The Last Unicorn
It's a great book, too. Honorary Animation Mentions: Toy Story 1+2 and Shrek

  • Trainspotting
    Fucking brilliant.

  • Clerks
What about those contractors on the Death Star?

  • Cyrano de Bergerac
Drawback: One has to watch it in French. Honorary Gerard Dépardieu Movie Mention: Green Card

  • Muriel's Wedding
Best Movie Ever to Cry to. And I do every time. (Girls Alert!)

  • The Crimson Pirate
*insert generic pirate joke here* Serious swashbuckling.

  • Lord of the Rings
Peter Jackson did such a lovely job of creating a Middle Earth that I can wholeheartedly endorse.

  • La vita è bella
It just breaks my heart every time I see it.

I'll stop here. There's just too many movies. Too many. If I put down To Kill a Mockingbird now, I'll include every Cary Grant/James Stewart/Gregory Peck movie that I like and we'd be here for a while. So I won't. It's only a pointless list anyway.

Notes:

A. I used to really like Pulp Fiction but it got beaten to death somehow. Same goes for the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Though I do a mean timewarp. Or Monty Python movies. Romanes eunt domus.

B. No, I did not forget The Matrix.

C. I sincerely wish I could include any film by Terry Gilliam, because I like him personally and they are just so different but I just can't stand watching them. I am sorry.

D. Movies that I have a feeling I might include but haven't seen yet: The Godfather. Loved, loved, loved the book. The Shawshank Redemption. Got the DVD, haven't watched it yet. Maybe tomorrow.

Just a quick sidenote before I go to bed:

Three reasons why sucking at chess sort of reminds me of my life sometimes...

  • I can't think ahead one minute.
  • I will be jumping into certain doom gleefully because it looks like a good idea at the time.
  • Sometimes, everything starts out well but goes downhill from there.

That, and I am always confusing bishops and pawns. (well, those damn things DO look alike.)
